The founding members of CPS Trust Ireland are three friends who acquired, by different routes, first-hand knowledge of individuals and projects helping to alleviate poverty in Zambia, Southern Africa. They saw at first-hand the difference being made in improving the lives and futures of some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people on this planet. Each became aware • of the vast gulf between the material living standards and opportunities of people in rural areas and urban shanty towns in sub–Saharan Africa and those that prevail in Ireland, • that even small levels of funding can have major impacts in improving people’s lives when placed in the hands of the right people, • that familiarity and personal links with such projects provided a window on the greatness of the human spirit that is personally uplifting and can be shared with family and friends. By 2019, the three friends had reached a stage in their personal and professional lives where they wished to support development work in sub-Saharan Africa that they were personally aware of in a more structured and systematic way, and to be in a position to identify and welcome other people, principally relatives and friends, to join them in doing so. Their joint vision was to set up an organisation that would allow them to combine and multiply their efforts to achieve tangible results in addressing these issues. To this end, they established CPS Trust Ireland in May 2019 (‘CPS’ from Conroy, Prendiville and Sheehan, their three surnames) and commenced the process of registering the charity prior to commencement of charitable activities.
